School of Engineering Sciences to Host African Diaspora Scholar

The School of Engineering Sciences (SES) at the University of Ghana has been selected to host Prof. Charles-Darwin Annan, an African Diaspora Scholar from Université Laval, Québec, Canada. His visit is part of a collaborative project under the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Programme (CADFP).

The collaboration aims to develop a Doctoral Degree Programme in Resilient Engineering for Future Africa. Working with SES faculty, staff and students, Prof. Annan will contribute to creating a multidisciplinary engineering programme designed to train and mentor doctoral students, fostering the next generation of academics in Africa.

Prof. Annan, who serves as Director of Graduate Programmes in Civil and Water Engineering at Université Laval, brings extensive expertise to this initiative. He will collaborate with Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of SES, along with Dr.-Ing. Peace Korshiwor Amoatey, Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Prof. Jemima Asabea Anderson, Dean of the International Programmes Office (IPO).

The project aligns with the University of Ghana’s strategic vision to lead impactful research and higher education in the region while providing a transformative student experience. The new four-year PhD programme will serve as a hub for engineering education in Africa, creating an inclusive and diverse learning environment.

This initiative is one of 43 projects selected under the CADFP, which supports curriculum co-development, collaborative research, graduate training and mentoring across Africa. Funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in partnership with the Association of African Universities (AAU), the CADFP has supported nearly 750 fellowships since its inception in 2013.

Prof. Annan’s visit marks a significant step in enhancing international academic collaboration, strengthening engineering education and contributing to Africa’s development in technology and innovation.
