UG Management Meets Education Minister, Courts Support for Research Funding, Staffing and Infrastructure Development

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo led a delegation to congratulate the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, an alumnus of UG, on his new role and also to discuss key issues affecting the University, explore opportunities for collaboration and strengthen partnerships with the Ministry.

Discussions focused on research funding, timely replacement of staff, particularly for those appointed by President Mahama to lead state institutions, infrastructure development, and financial challenges. Prof. Amfo reiterated UG’s readiness to support government initiatives with expertise available at the University and stressed the importance of advancing infrastructural development to address the University’s accommodation issues.

Pro VC (ASA) Prof. Gordon Awandare stressed the importance of operationalising the National Research Fund and highlighted the need for universities to directly manage scholarship disbursement as they have robust and inclusive processes in place to manage scholarships.

Hon. Iddrisu reaffirmed his commitment to higher education reforms and pledged to advocate for staff replacements and explore funding for stalled projects while working with other stakeholders to operationalise the National Research Fund. He also assured the delegation that higher education funding would be prioritised in the upcoming National Education Sector Reforms Dialogue.

Present at the meeting were the Provost of the College of Health Sciences (CHS), Prof. Alfred E. Yawson; UG’s Legal Counsel, Dr. Abdul Basit Aziz Bamba; Director of Public Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah and Senior Assistant Registrar/Administrator at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Mrs. Arhizah Blay-Abiti. Representing the Ministry of Education were the Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Ms. Mavis Asare Donkor, and the Coordinator for the Ghana Education Outcomes Project (GEOP), Hajia Nana Fatima High.
