The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and a Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Director-Designate for the Institute of Applied Science and Technology, Professor David Dodoo-Arhin have been featured in an interview with Carnegie Corporation of New York’s quarterly newsletter publication on Africa programme captioned “The People Reinventing Higher Education in Africa”
This publication which is a Q&A series highlights the experiences and achievements of selected African researchers who have benefitted from training and fellowship programmes supported through Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Higher Education and Research in Africa portfolio.
As part of SciDev.Net’s “Role Models” series, which interviews successful female scientists, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, a 2009 recipient of the Corporation-funded African Humanities Fellowship discusses how women are encumbered professionally, the need for community support, and the role of mentorship on the road to success.
In the interview with the Vice-Chancellor, she explains what it takes to become the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana; what she brings to the table as Vice-Chancellor, why it is important to have women in senior positions in science and research; pragmatics; and her passion to mentor young professional, both male and female.

Professor David Dodoo-Arhin and his research team on the other hand, are exploring cutting-edge energy technologies including the conversion of microplastics into fuel and the development of a new generation of supercapacitors and batteries for sustainable power production. He narrates in the interview, his background which covered his upbringing, education, and research interests; obstacles faced; his interaction with policymakers, community engagements, training in science communication; and what he does during his free time.
