Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo Joins ACU Governing Council to Strengthen Global Higher Education
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has officially been inducted as one of eight new members of the Governing Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). Her induction comes after the announcement of her appointment on August 1, 2024.
As a member of the ACU Council, Prof. Amfo will contribute to promoting global academic partnerships, support research initiatives and address critical challenges facing universities across the Commonwealth. She joins a distinguished team of university leaders tasked with steering the future of international higher education.
Prof. Amfo expressed her enthusiasm about her new role, stating, “I am excited to be part of the ACU Council. Even though it is an onerous responsibility, I believe my experience from various higher education networks on the continent and globally will be useful in this new role.”
In an earlier statement, the Chair of the ACU Council, Prof. Cheryl de la Rey, warmly welcomed the new members, noting, “Our newest members bring a wealth of knowledge and insight, which will be invaluable in helping to shape our strategic plan and ensure the ACU continues to thrive.”
Other new members joining the Council include Prof. Dr. Syed Humayun Akhter, Bangladesh Open University; Prof. Bruce Dowton, Macquarie University, Australia; Prof. Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Bin Abu Osman, Universiti Malaya; Prof. C. Raj Kumar, OP Jindal Global University, India; Prof. Benedict Mwavu Mutua, The Technical University of Kenya; Prof. P. S. Shukla, North Eastern Hill University, India; and Prof. Shearer West, University of Nottingham, UK.
Since assuming her role as Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amfo has championed impactful research, strategic collaborations and technology-driven solutions to position the University of Ghana as a global leader in higher education, research and partnerships.
Her appointment to the ACU Council recognises her exemplary leadership and wealth of experience in university governance. With her commitment to advancing academic excellence and her forward-thinking approach to institutional development, Prof. Amfo is in a position to make substantial contributions to shaping the future of higher education across the Commonwealth.
