Centre for Social Policy Studies Co-organises Ghana Philanthropy Conference 2024

The Centre for Social Policy Studies (CSPS) at the University of Ghana co-organised a two-day philanthropy conference in Ghana. This was in collaboration with the Star Ghana Foundation (SGF), Ghana Philanthropy Forum, Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), CSOs SDGs Platform, and the National Youth Authority.

Conference participants discussed how to promote volunteering and other forms of philanthropy, which is generosity or compassion towards others, expressed through charitable acts, in Ghanaians.

Dr. Emmanuel Kumi, Senior Research Fellow at CSPS, represented the Centre at the event, which was on the theme, "Volunteerism as Civic Action”. He spoke about the ways in which volunteering could help address social needs and add to efforts to promote social development. Dr. Kumi conducts research on philanthropy and volunteerism.

His research in this area has won an award from the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action.

Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell, a Catholic Missionary Priest, who spoke at the event, encouraged Ghanaians to embrace volunteerism. He noted that philanthropy was not the obligation of only people with power and money but that every individual could find ways to show care for those in need.
