Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Upgrades Maternity Block of UG Hospital
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit of the University of Ghana Hospital has undergone a significant transformation due to the generosity of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The maternity block of the Hospital has been renovated, expanded and furnished with modern delivery and recovery beds. They also provided a theatre bed, surgical lights and an anesthesia machine for the new maternity theatre.
Prior to the renovation, the unit faced challenges due to inadequate facilities. Despite these limitations, the dedicated healthcare professionals continued to provide essential services to many patients.
At the handing-over ceremony, Elder Adeyinka Ayodele Ojediran, First Counselor, Africa West Area Presidency of the Church, noted that the gesture is part of the Church's broader efforts to promote equality, safety and timely medical care for those in need while promoting social, economic and spiritual wellness worldwide.
“Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus Christ performed numerous healings and offered solace to the afflicted illustrating His particular attention to the needs of women and children “, he said.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo highlighted the importance of partnerships in advancing UG's infrastructure and support for special initiatives. She expressed her gratitude to the Church for its ongoing support, noting that the upgraded facility will significantly enhance the University Hospital’s ability to deliver exceptional care to the community.
‘‘I am particularly pleased about the addition of washrooms to every ward and a consulting room with a spacious area for OPD clients,’ she said
Dr. Timothy Senunyeme, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, highlighted that the upgraded facility also has an anesthesia machine and diathermy machine, a modern scrub area and a modern sluice for sinks, ensuring optimal hygiene and patient safety. “We are committed to maintaining our facility at the highest standards, ensuring that the sustainability and excellence of our first-class services remain our priority”, he said.
The Church also used the occasion to present a number of items, including visitors' chairs, blood pressure machines and a fridge to support the work of the Public Health Unit of the UG Hospital.
The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of a plaque, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a tour of the newly upgraded facility.
This kind gesture by the Church supports UG’s 4th Strategic Priority ‘Engagements and Partnerships’ which recognises the importance of building strong partnerships with industries, governments, civil society organisations and other academic institutions. These relationships, grounded in mutual respect, will catalyse innovation, reinvigorate the University’s practices and amplify its influence.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Registrar of the University, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah; Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Prof. Mark Sandow Yidana and Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof Joseph Yaro. Also in attendance were members of the Hospital Management Committee, staff of the hospital as well as a delegation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
