Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin Sponsors Construction of Second Alumni Hotspot Comfort Zone On Campus

The University of Ghana Alumni Association has broken ground for its second Hotspot Comfort Zone project, sited near the Jones Quartey Building.

This initiative, sponsored by Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, Republic of Ghana and an alumnus, aims to enhance student life on campus. The Hotspot Comfort Zone will be a one-storey building, designed to accommodate 60 students, with six washrooms and 24/7 Wi-Fi access.

This space will provide students with a place to relax between classes, supporting both their academic success and overall student experience.

Prof. Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs who acted in the Vice-Chancellor’s stead, stated in brief remarks that, the projects are stepping stones towards the enhancement of the overall student experience on campus and aligns with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor. He expressed Management’s gratitude to the benefactor Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin for sponsoring the project while commending UG Alumni Association for its constant efforts to support projects that bring development to the university community.

‘‘Anytime we gather to break the ground, it is always a significant occasion because it is another step forward in our effort to transform University of Ghana and improve the student experience for our cherished students,” he added.

Prof. Awandare highlighted the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of transforming UG into the most student-friendly University in West Africa. He believes that, the vision is gradually becoming a reality due to the improvements Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has introduced to the University over the years.

He noted that, some Student Hotspot Comfort Zones are already under construction and thanked the Students Representative Council (SRC) for their support in establishing additional two. He encouraged other Alumni to support projects of the University with their resources to further enhance the University community.

Ms. Doris Kisiwa Ansah, Chairman, University of Ghana Alumni Association, expressed her excitement about the positive impacts the project will have on students and urged Alumni to cultivate the habit of contributing to the development of the University.

Additionally, she pledged that the UG Alumni Association will continue to support projects in the University to enhance the overall student experience on campus.

RT. Hon. Alban Bagbin was represented at the ceremony by Hon. Magnus Kofi Amoatey, Counsel to the Speaker of Parliament. In his remarks, he reiterated RT. Hon Alban Bagbin’s excitement to sponsor the project because he shares in the vision of the University. He urged the contractor to work assiduously to ensure a timely completion of the project.

“Speaker RT. Hon Alban Bagbin only wishes that the contractor working on the Hotspot project will work day and night and complete it before September when he will personally be here,” he stated.

He added that, he will work at rallying UG Alumni in Parliament to join the Association and support projects in the University.

A representative from the construction company, Nii Dentis Company Ltd, Azobre Imoro Asare disclosed that, every financial aspect of the project has been settled thus, the project will commence immediately and is scheduled for completion in three months.

The architectural drawings of the project were displayed and explained by the Architect, Kwame Ofori, from UG’s Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD).

Rev. Dr. Kwaku Boamah, Chaplain at Akuafo Hall, conducted a dedication prayer. A ceremonial sod-cutting and planting of seedlings was performed by Hon. Magnus Kofi Amoatey, Prof. Gordon Awandare and Ms. Doris Kisiwa Ansah.

In delivering the vote of thanks, Mrs. Anna Amporful, Executive Secretary, UG-Alumni Association extended heartfelt gratitude to Rt.Hon Alban Bagbin for the sponsorship and thanked everyone present for their support.

The event was attended by members of the UG Alumni Council and moderated by the Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Mrs. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah.
