UG Extends IT Support to Two Senior High Schools
The University of Ghana has taken another significant step towards empowering Senior High School students with IT skills, by donating repurposed computers to two schools.
This arrangement saw the Odorgonno Senior High School in the Greater Accra Region and Presby Senior High School, Koradaso, Begoro in the Eastern Region receive the computers at a brief ceremony held at the premises of the University of Ghana Computing Systems (UGCS). With 40 computers available for distribution, each school received 20 computers.
Registrar of the University, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, conducted the donation exercise on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and highlighted the Vice-Chancellor's digitalisation initiative, saying, “For students to be ready for the job market, they need to be digitally proficient.” She also mentioned additional initiatives such as the Classroom Modernisation and the Hotspot Comfort Zones that are in place to enhance students’ learning experiences at the University.
The Registrar mentioned the importance of safeguarding the computers, urging both students and teachers to ensure their protection to maximise their utility over an extended period. She stressed that “responsible handling and maintenance are crucial to ensuring that the computers serve their purpose effectively and benefit the students' academic journey.”
During the brief ceremony, Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of Public Affairs at UG, highlighted the Vice-Chancellor's commitment to technological advancement, stating, “The Vice-Chancellor is enthusiastic about assisting students within the University and extending help beyond the University walls.”
Mr. Francis Kwabena Boachie, Chief Information Technology Officer (CITO), emphasised the importance of computers in today's era of rapid technological change, advising students to take advantage of them. He noted, “The 4th industrial evolution is characterised by rapid technological change and innovation, hence students should take advantage of the computers to align themselves with the current technological innovation.”
Representatives of the senior high schools expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the entire University Management for the donation. They promised that the computers would be put to good use and would benefit the students, while also requesting further educational interactions from the University.
In closing remarks, Mrs. Arhizah Blay-Abiti Senior Assistant Registrar and Administrator at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, expressed appreciation to all attendees and urged the school administrators to ensure that students use the laptops effectively.
Among the attendees were Mr. Gerald Manteaw, the Headmaster of Begoro Presec; Mr. Emmanuel Bannor, a Head of Department at Begoro Presec; Mr. George Teye Borboryoe, an Assistant Headmaster at Begoro Presec; Mr. Eric Bimpong, an Assistant Headmaster at Odorgonno SHS and Mr. Ngils Lutterodt, the IT Co-ordinator at Odorgonno SHS.
