UG Organises 2-day Workshop for Affiliated Institutions
The University of Ghana recently hosted a two-day workshop for Academic Officers from its affiliated institutions to enhance their performance and align their practices with the University's standards.
Organised by the Affiliation Unit of the Academic Affairs Directorate under the leadership of Mrs. Essie T. Budu Ayensah, this first-of-its-kind workshop aimed to build the capacity of academic offices, enabling them to better fulfil their duties and responsibilities.
The main objective was to ensure that students receiving certificates from these affiliated institutions meet the same high standards as those of the University of Ghana.
Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare highlighted UG's role as a partner and mentor.
"As your partner, we are very mindful of our responsibility to mentor and supervise what you do to ensure that you are delivering on the standards that we expect of you, which is the University of Ghana standards, the best in Ghana," he stated.
Prof. Awandare indicated that UG sets the benchmark for quality training and expressed hope for the continued strengthening of the partnership with its affiliated institutions.
In an interview with the Public Affairs news team, Mrs. Ayensah, noted that the high turnover of staff at some affiliated institutions has led to a need for continuous training, as new personnel often lack the necessary experience.
She expressed her hope to make this an annual programme, serving as a refresher course for these institutions.
"With the work we have been doing together, I realised that there was a gap, because sometimes there were avoidable errors. So, I decided to put this together for them, which we could make an annual programme to be like a refresher course for them," she stated.
The workshop included both theoretical and practical sessions, with the second day dedicated to hands-on activities for participants to apply their learning.
It covered topics such as admission requirements for all levels of entry, facilitated by Mrs. Yvonne Lartey, Head of Admissions Unit. The session on Processes and Procedures in Graduate Level Admissions was facilitated by Ms. Loretta Otinkorang, Academic Office and Mr. Christopher Eduful Arthur, Graduation Unit, both at the School of Graduate Studies.
After a short break, a discussion on uploading students’ biodata and its implications was led by Mrs. Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah, Director of Academic Affairs.
Mr. Kwame Adu Offei, Senior Research Assistant, discussed mature entry and requirements, while Mr. Fredrick Yuorkuu, Head of the Examination Unit, also discussed the consequences of not adhering to course registrations and examination deadlines.
Mrs. Nyako-Danquah in closing remarks thanked all participants for attending the training and emphasised the importance of the partnership between UG and its affiliated institutions.
She expressed hope that participants would apply what they learned over the two days to enhance the reputation of both the University of Ghana and their respective institutions.
Participating institutions included Wisconsin University College, African University College of Communication, Catholic Institute of Business and Technology, Family Health Medical School, Islamic University, Institute of Accountancy Training, Knutsford University College, St. Victor’s Major Seminary, Narh-Bita College, Western Hills School of Nursing, St. Peter’s Seminary, St. Paul’s Seminary and Nightingale School of Nursing.
