UTAG-UG Executives Introduce First Elected Women’s Executive Officer to Management
UTAG-UG Executives of the University of Ghana led by the President, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has officially introduced the Association’s first ever elected Women’s Executive Officer to Senior Management of the University.
Dr. Sarah Marjie, UTAG-UG's newly elected Women’s Executive Officer, was sworn into office in January 2024. The Office has been created to address and prioritise women's issues at the local level, as well as promote gender parity.
Prof. Gyampo in his remarks mentioned that over the years there have been concerns that the UTAG association is male dominated. The association, therefore, decided to create an office to not only represent women but also advocate for their welfare. Prof. Gyampo further stated that after reviewing the Association’s constitution, the Women’s Executive Officer’s portfolio has been created at both the national and local levels. He indicated that the tradition of introducing newly elected executives to Management is aimed at deepening UTAG’s relationship with Management.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor was Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development (RID). He congratulated Dr. Marjie and welcomed her on board as a recognised executive of UTAG-UG.
‘Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Sarah Marjie. Thank you to the UTAG-UG Executives for taking this step. I think what you did is in the right direction. We welcome Dr. Marjie and assure her of Management’s support. Once again, congratulations and welcome to the team of UTAG-UG executives,’ he noted.
In an interview with UG’s Public Affairs News Desk, Dr. Sarah Marjie expressed her excitement and gratitude for being elected as an executive. As part of her service to office, Dr. Marjie is looking forward to prioritising women’s health, especially breast cancer advocacy. She seeks to bring free or partly paid breast screening to the door steps of staff members. Dr. Marjie also assured female members of her dedication to treat women-related issues with importance to ensure quick solutions.
She concluded by expressing hope that her appointment will serve as an encouragement for women to be more involved in leadership roles. She looks forward to advocating for more women representation in other higher positions in the association.
Also present at the meeting were the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah; Pro Vice Chancellor, ASA, Professor Gordon A. Awandare and Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah. Other members of the UTAG-UG team were Dr. Inusah Abdul-Nasiru, Vice President, Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison, Secretary and Prof. Vera Fiador, Treasurer.
