The Directorate facilitates internal and external research funding and supports researchers and multi-disciplinary research teams to achieve the University's research goals focused on the following areas;

1. Infectious and non-communicable diseases
2. Food production and processing, including improved approaches to breeding
3. Trans-disciplinary research into climate change adaptation
4. Development policy, poverty monitoring and evaluation
5. Politics, socio-cultural change, mobility and development
6. Creative arts, education and communication, and Information Literacy
7. Fourth industrial revolution tools (artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, digital transformation, etc)

The Office for Research, Innovation and Development (ORID) began operating in the 2010/2011 academic year and has the specific responsibility of:

  • Developing and implementing the University's research policy
  • Fund-raising for research
  • Ensuring effective distribution and efficient use of research funds in line with priority areas identified in the University's strategic plan
  • Setting standards and ensuring effective dissemination of high-quality research output.
  • Representing the interests of the University in contractual relationships, grant applications and reporting administering contract research
  • Establishing systems for ethical clearance
  • Registration, patenting and commercialisation of intellectual property
